Fernand Khnopff (12 September 1858, Grembergen – 12 November 1921, Brussels) was a Belgian symbolist painter, sculptor and designer. The paintings of Fernand Khnopff belong to Symbolism. Khnopff's best known subjects are landscapes in Fosset, portraits of ladies from the Brussels bourgeoisie, cityscapes of Bruges and symbolist compositions. Most paintings reveal a mysterious, alienating atmosphere. His characters often display androgynous features. His masterpiece is The Caress (L'Art ou Des Caresse) from 1896, a depiction of Oedipus leaning against the Sphinx.
