An upside down trilobite (this is the famous "Gold Bug" trilobite referencing the famous Edgar Allan Poe short story) preserved in pyrite with their soft tissues such as leg and antennae intact. This 450 million year old Triarthrus trilobite is from the Late Ordovician Period of New York State. Soft tissue preservation in fossils of any kind is incredibly rare. In this case this trilobite was deposited in deep water nearly anoxic conditions. The deep water sediments were rich in iron sulphides resulting in the trilobite being preserved in pyrite.
The slate measures 6 x 6 x 1.2 cm and the measures of the trilobite are 1.2 x0.5 cm Trilobites from this unique deposit are extremely tiny and rare.
